Quarter horse trainer Bob Johnson won his 1,000th race when 2-year-old filly Smashingly Classic won the second race Thursday at Canterbury Park in Shakopee.

"It took lots and lots of racing," Johnson said. "I've been at it for 30 years."

Johnson, 49, has 47 career victories at Canterbury.

Etc. • Andrew Paulson of White Bear Lake beat Peter Malnati of Dandridge, Tenn., 7 and 6 in the round of 32 at the U.S. Public Links Golf Championship in Aurora, Colo. Randall Hutchison of Traverse City, Mich., then defeated Paulson 7 and 5.

• Brent Krause went 3-for-3 with a double and scored three runs as the Saints beat visiting Sioux City 4-1.

• Jon Rydberg of Oakdale was named to the U.S. tennis team that will compete in the Paralympic Games from Sept. 6-17 in Beijing. The team will be coached by Dan James of Oakdale.
