Aug. 21: Hours after she breaks up with him over the phone, David Wright tracks Mariah Samuels to her ex-partner’s north Minneapolis home. He repeatedly pistol-whips her in the face and attempts to choke her, Samuels will later tell police. Wright flees before police arrive.

Aug. 26: A Hennepin County domestic violence advocate visits Samuels at her home to help her apply for a restraining order against Wright.

Aug. 27: A judge signs the Order for Protection, and it is formally filed in court.

Aug. 29: Wright is served with the Order for Protection, which bars him from any contact with Samuels.

Sept. 14, around 3:30 a.m.: Wright sends Samuels a flurry of harassing text messages, accusing her of sleeping with another man. They have a brief text exchange, and he tries to call her.

Sept. 14, 5:14 a.m.: Samuels calls 911 and reports Wright’s violation of the restraining order. Two Minneapolis police officers arrive at the home of Samuels’ ex-partner, where she’s apparently staying. Samuels shows Officer Ryan Weber the messages and asks him to examine her vehicle for fear it’s been tampered with. She is convinced that Wright came to the property. Weber writes in his report that Samuels told him she “felt safe” and that Wright would not have knowledge of this particular address. A review of body camera footage proves that never happened.

Sept. 14, 7:37 a.m.: Samuels posts surveillance video of the Aug. 21 assault on Facebook, along with screenshots of recent text messages from Wright.

Sept. 14, 7:45 a.m.: In a post on Facebook, Samuels accuses Minneapolis police of not doing anything to protect her.

Sept. 14, 7:50 a.m. Police respond to 911 calls in the area and find Samuels mortally wounded on the ground just outside her own home, several blocks from her earlier interaction with police. She’d been shot 10 times.

Sept. 15: Wright is arrested in Anoka and charged with second-degree murder.
