Fighting Hawks, Roughriders and Nodaks are the final three nickname choices in the vote for a new nickname for the University of North Dakota's athletic teams.

The results were announced Sunday night, and the final vote will be held during the week of Nov. 2.

Fighting Hawks led with 31.2 percent followed by Roughriders at 21 percent and Nodaks at 20.5 percent.

North Stars and Sundogs trailed in the vote and were eliminated.

More than 22,000 votes were cast by students, alumni, staff, season-ticket holders and donors to the school.

Originally, a runoff vote was planned between the top two nicknames if none of them reached 50 percent, but university President Robert Kelley changed the rule to include the third-place finisher because the second and third choices finished within 116 votes.

After years of emotional discussion, the university shelved its Fighting Sioux nickname under pressure from the NCAA and some American Indian groups. The school has gone without a nickname for several years.
