Two people are hospitalized, one in critical condition, and a third person was injured after someone opened fire on a Metro Transit bus in north Minneapolis on Friday afternoon.

The shooting occurred after the suspect stepped off the bus, said Metro Transit spokesperson Drew Kerr. The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of 36th Avenue N. and Penn Avenue N.

Kerr said Saturday that a suspect has been identified through surveillance footage captured on the bus, but police are still searching for them. Transit police have increased patrols in the area the shooting took place.

One victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. The second remains hospitalized in stable condition, and the third victim was treated and released.

“No amount of violent crime will be tolerated on our transit system,” Joe Dotseth, interim chief of the Metro Transit Police Department, said in a statement. “We will continue working tirelessly alongside our partners to bring this suspect into custody so they can be held accountable for their actions.”

Through September of this year, Minneapolis police reported a drop in nonfatal shooting victims, continuing a downward trajectory since a peak in 2021, according to a report from the Minnesota Justice Research Center.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Metro Transit Police Department’s tip line.
