A third perpetrator has received a long prison sentence in connection with the fatal shooting of one man and the wounding of two others before the victims’ vehicle crashed into a southern Minnesota home.
Cham Obang Oman, 30, of Austin, Minn., was sentenced in Mower County District Court last week after jurors convicted him of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the gunfire in June 2023 that killed 25-year-old Gumdel Gilo, of Austin, and wounded two other people.
With credit for time in jail since his arrest, Oman is expected to serve about the first 17 years in prison and the balance on supervised release.
Oman drove the vehicle with 20-year-old Jenup Stepen Chop and 26-year-old Manamany Omot Abella, both of Austin, as his passengers while Chop fired more than 20 times at another vehicle.
Before the shooting, Oman bought an extended magazine for Chop, who was convicted of murder and sentenced Feb. 28 to a term topping 37 years. Abella pleaded guilty to aiding an offender after the fact and received a 10-year sentence.
Attorney General Keith Ellison’s office prosecuted Oman, Chop and Abella after a referral from the Mower County Attorney’s Office.
“Cham Oman aided and abetted a horrific crime, and now he will be paying the price for it,” Ellison said in a statement.
Court records show previous convictions for Oman in Minnesota for assault with a weapon, theft, drug possession, disorderly conduct and fleeing police.
