Maybe you're too young to remember the 1980s movie "St. Elmo's Fire," so let's start with a little refresher on that. First off, that's Demi Moore. She would have been roughly 23 years old when that movie came out in 1985. Ashton Kutcher was about 7. So there's that. You'll also notice a fresh-faced Ally Sheedy. Let's also drink in deeply of the male cast: Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and Rob Lowe (and that's Lowe three years before the sex tape controversy and more than 20 years before his excellent turn on Parks and Rec). So this was a prime Brat Pack flick. The film is remembered by us for two reasons: 1) It appears to be one of those 1980s films that is, for whatever reason, not particularly fondly remembered. It rates a paltry 6.0 on IMDB -- which means it even fails what we call "The Family Stone" test. The Family Stone, a harmless, watchable and primarily forgettable film from 2005 generated a 6.2 on IMDB, thus setting a bar for us of movies we will at least consider watching. If it fails that test -- and doesn't get at least a 6.2 -- we will not watch it. So while many 80s movies like "The Breakfast Club," "Better off Dead," and "Sixteen Candles" remain beloved, St. Elmo's Fire misses that mark. 2) We recall when it came out it was playing at a movie theater very near where we lived in Grand Forks. And we remember that one day, someone did very terrible things to the magnetic letters on the sign advertising the movie. We won't get into specifics, but the perpetrator -- and we were 9 at the time, so this was not us -- must have found some spare 4th, 9th, 12th and 15th letters of the alphabet and turned them into a saint with a fire.
Now, however, we have a third reason to think of this movie. John Parr, who wrote the hit song and title track to the movie -- "Man in Motion (St. Elmo's Fire)" -- has released a new studio version with lyrics devoted to, you guessed it, Tim Tebow.
