As homeownership rates have fallen in Minnesota, the demand for rentals has increased.

Figures for first quarter 2012

Minnesota homeownership rate: 70.4 percent, down from a quarterly peak of 79 percent in early 2005

Average Twin Cities vacancy rate: 2.8 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Average Twin Cities rent prices: $935, up 2.1 percent
