A man is dead and a 17-year-old is in custody after a shooting inside a north Minneapolis home early Tuesday morning.

Police were called to the home on the 1600 block of Thomas Avenue N. at 2:30 a.m. and found a man with multiple gunshot wounds inside. He died from his injuries after being hospitalized.

Preliminary information suggested the shooting happened during a verbal argument, police said.

The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended. Police said they were “investigating connections between the arrestee and other violent crimes in the city this year.”

“Another family has forever been impacted by senseless violence,” said Chief Brian O’Hara in the statement. “Settling disputes with a firearm is completely unacceptable, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure justice in this case.”

The homicide is Minneapolis’ 65th of the year, compared with 78 as of the same date in 2024, according to a Minnesota Star Tribune database.

Nonfatal shootings are also down through September of this year, according to police, continuing a downward trajectory since a peak in 2021, according to a report from the Minnesota Justice Research Center.
