Target is rolling out Segways

Some security workers at Target stores are getting a new set of wheels.

In the past several months Target has added about 150 two-wheeled Segway scooters at its stores, where they're being used by security workers to patrol parking lots.

Many malls have Segway-riding security guards, but Target is believed to be the first large retailer to have them.

Target said Monday that it first began looking at the Segways in January 2007 and decided to put about one in each of 150 stores last fall.

Target stores in the Twin Cities area are among those getting Segways, said Brad Benyas, whose B2B Segway dealership in New Brighton landed the deal.

If bought one at a time, Segways range from about $5,100 to nearly $5,700, Benyas said. Target was charged less for buying in bulk, he said.
