Through a partnership with the World Wildlife Fund, Supervalu Inc. is expected to announce Wednesday that it plans to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent by the end of 2012.

Eden Prairie-based Supervalu, owner of the Cub Foods supermarket chain, is the first retailer to join the World Wildlife Fund's "Climate Savers" program. There are 25 other large companies in that program, including Hewlett Packard, IBM, Nike and Johnson & Johnson.

Supervalu's efforts will include converting store lighting from fluorescent lamps to more efficient LED-based lighting, improving refrigeration efficiencies and reducing diesel fuel consumption and increasing efficiency in transportation.
