Vinny DiFazio went 4-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored as the St. Paul Saints edged the host Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Park. It was the seventh game in a row with at least one RBI for DiFazio, which tied a club record.

Teammate Alonzo Harris was 4-for-4 with an RBI, one run and two steals.

The Saints (22-4) won their eight series in a row — winning two of three games with Winnipeg — despite playing without three injured regulars.

Rush Creek golfer wins Mid-Players' title

Joe O'Brien, of Rush Creek Golf Club, defeated 2012 champion Sammy Schmitz, of Valleywood Golf Course, 3 and 2 to win the MGA Mid-Players' Championship at Wayzata Country Club.

"This gives me tremendous confidence and makes me want to play a few more of these," said O'Brien, who was playing in his first MGA event since regaining his amateur status last July. "I'm thrilled and can't wait to get to know some of these players."

Schmitz finished second for the fourth time in six years.

 Todd Hillier of Windsong Farm edged John Anderson of Bunker Hills Golf Course 1 up for the MGA Senior Players' Championship at Wayzata Country Club. Hillier, a potato farmer from North Dakota, two putted from 75 feet on the final hole for a par to win the match.

• Junior Ruby Stauber of Wayzata was named Gatorade's track and field athlete of the year in Minnesota. She broke a 29-year-old record in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 6.5 seconds) in the Class 2A state meet.

 Rob Kueneman and Vicki Davis were hired by the MIAC to be its men's and women's basketball supervisors of officials, respectively. It was one position until now. Both currently hold the same roles for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. They will also supervise officials in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
