Police have identified the man who was killed in a crash in St. Paul last week that involved a driver suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Albert J. Howard, 49, of Brooklyn Park, died at the scene of the wreck about 2:35 a.m. Dec. 29 in a residential area on E. Sycamore Street, just east of Jackson Street, police said Monday.

The 44-year-old driver was taken to Regions Hospital for testing to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, police said. He remains hospitalized while authorities await test results, police Sgt. Mike Ernster said Tuesday. His identity has yet to be released.

The vehicle was heading east on Sycamore, where it left the road and struck one tree and then another, Ernster said.
