Firefighters are investigating an apartment fire that critically injured an adult in St. Paul early Jan. 3.

The blaze started at about 12:36 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, according to St. Paul Fire Department news release. Firefighters responded to the 400 block of Summit Avenue and found an apartment fire in a three-story residential building with condominiums.

Officials contained the fire and removed one adult with critical injuries from the unit. It’s unclear how the fire began, and officials say it’s unclear if smoke alarms were present.

“No additional victims were located during primary and secondary searches of the building,” Jamie Smith, deputy chief for the St. Paul Fire Department, said in a statement.

“All remaining units in the building are expected to be habitable.”

Weeks before, a man died from injuries caused by a house fire in St. Paul. Officials are still investigating that Dec. 18 fire on Cooke Avenue but say a space heater may have been involved.
