One person died from injuries from a house fire in St. Paul’s Payne-Phalen neighborhood early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Emergency responders were called to the 400 block of Cooke Avenue E. just before 1 a.m., the St. Paul Fire Department said in a news release.

Firefighters rescued an unconscious occupant from the residence’s second floor, but the victim died from their injuries after being hospitalized.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although the department suggested a space heater found near the fire’s origin may have played a role.
