A woman’s unborn child was killed in a fiery two-vehicle collision in St. Cloud caused by an alleged drunken driver, officials said.

The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Feb. 13 in the 3200 block of 5th Street N., police said.

Nastaho Amare, 34, of St. Cloud was critically injured while in the late stages of pregnancy, and her unborn child did not survive, police added.

According to police:

Christopher Otte, 32, of Avon, Minn., was heading west on 5th Street and veered into oncoming traffic and struck Amare’s minivan head-on.

Amare was pinned in her vehicle while it was in flames. Firefighters removed Amare from the minivan and put out the fire. Emergency responders took her to St. Cloud Hospital.

Otte was taken to the same hospital with noncritical injuries.

“Based on the investigation,” a police statement read, “officers believed Otte was impaired and that alcohol was a contributing factor.”

Otte has left the hospital and is in the Stearns County jail awaiting charges.

Court records in Minnesota show Otte was convicted of drunken driving in 2019.
