High schools in a south metro school district are closed today as officials work with law enforcement to investigate potential threats made online against the schools.

District 196 officials said they received word of “potential threats” at Apple Valley, Eagan, Eastview and Rosemount high schools as well as the School of Environmental Studies and decided to call off classes.

“Safety is our first priority,” a notice on the district’s website reads. “We are working with local law enforcement. Out of an abundance of caution, high schools will be closed today.”

Students who had already arrived at school are being dismissed and buses will return students home, the district said.

The threats were directed to the high schools only, law enforcement is actively involved and all non-high school buildings remain open and operating normally, the district said.

“We will share additional information with families as it becomes available later this morning,” the district said.
