Sioux-watching: Next Gophers foe beats Mavericks

North Dakota, which was one point ahead of the Gophers in the WCHA race, beat MSU Mankato 4-1 on Friday to open up a three-point lead. It could be five by the time North Dakota comes to Mariucci next weekend.

A slightly edited game story from the SID at Minnesota State:

Grand Forks, N.D. - Minnesota State could not overcome a 2-0 first period deficit, falling 4-1 at #5 North Dakota on Friday. UND got off to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Corban Knight at 2:07 and Jason Gregoire at 6:45.

The Mavericks pulled within one at 10:13 after junior defenseman Ben Youds beat Brad Eidsness with a wrist shot from the top of the circle on a power play. The goal by Youds was his first of the year.

Knight got his second goal of the game at 9:41 of the second period, Gregoire his second on a power play marker by Gregoire at 16:26. MSU, which was 7-2-1 in its last 10 games, was outshot 33-19.
