Haley Lickfold won her first girls' tennis state tournament match a year ago as a freshman. This season, Lickfold is playing like a seasoned veteran.

The Shakopee sophomore has climbed to No. 5 this year in the Class 2A individual rankings, according to the coaches association poll.

"She has come into her own this season," Shakopee coach Susan Allen said.

A year ago, Lickfold fell to Eagan senior Danielle Donahue 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the state tournament. She bounced back to defeat Bemidji senior Jessica Solberg 6-4, 6-2 in the consolation bracket before being eliminated by Wayzata's Kelly Yang 6-2, 6-3. Yang, now a junior, is ranked third in the state, according to the coaches poll.

So far this season, Lickfold has accumulated a 12-2 record while playing at the top singles position for the Sabers. She has been starting since she was a seventh-grader.

"She has won two positional tournaments this season," Allen said. "Haley stepped up to the challenge immediately when our schedule allowed her to play those top competitors."

Milestone victory

Apple Valley girls' soccer coach Keith Randa registered his 300th career victory when the Eagles shut out Duluth East 1-0 in a nonconference matchup.

Senior midfielder Julia Lam scored the lone goal for the Eagles (3-10-1). Apple Valley has scored 12 goals in its three victories, and only six goals in the other 11 games.

Randa owns a career record of 300-114-49 with two regular-season games remaining. He has guided the Eagles' program since 1990.

Apple Valley won its only girls' soccer state championship under Randa in 1995, shutting out Wayzata 1-0 in the final.
