The Gophers men’s hockey team continued to build for its future when defenseman Broden McArthur of San Antonio announced Friday on Instagram that he has committed to play for the University of Minnesota.
McArthur, 16, scored 14 goals and added 33 assists in 47 games while serving as captain for the Dallas Stars Elite Under-16 AAA team during the 2024-25 season. A year earlier, McArthur had 21 goals and 29 assists in 75 games for the Stars’ Under-14 AAA team.
The 5-10, 176-pounder will play for the U.S. National Team Development Program’s Under-17 squad in Plymouth, Mich., this season. A 4½-star recruit according to the Puck Preps website, McArthur is expected to join the Gophers in the 2028-29 season.
McArthur is the fifth high-profile 16-year-old who has committed to Gophers coach Bob Motzko since Aug. 1, the opening day that age group could make official campus visits and pledge to programs.
He joins former Northfield defenseman Ben Geiger, former Moorhead forward Wyatt Cullen, former Lakeville North center Gunnar Conboy and former Stillwater right winger Luca Jarvis. McArthur will join Cullen and Geiger with the U.S. national program this season, while Conboy will play for Green Bay and Jarvis for Tri-City in the USHL.
Since late July, Motzko also has received commitments from Brooks Cullen, 18, who flipped his choice from Michigan State to Minnesota, and Carter Casey, 17, a former Grand Rapids goalie.
