The Gophers men’s hockey team received its third commitment in eight days when forward Wyatt Cullen of Moorhead announced Monday on Instagram that he will join coach Bob Motzko’s program. He joins Lakeville North center Gunnar Conboy, who on Saturday announced his decision to skate for Minnesota, and former Grand Rapids goalie Carter Casey, who pledged to the Gophers last Monday.
Players entering their junior year of high school could begin making official campus visits on Aug. 1, and in Cullen, 16, the Gophers secured a four-star recruit from a prominent Minnesota hockey family. Wyatt’s father, Matt Cullen, played for Moorhead High School and St. Cloud State before spending 21 seasons in the NHL, including four years over two stints with the Wild. His grandfather, Terry Cullen, is the former coach at Moorhead High School.
“I am proud and honored to announce my commitment to play Division 1 hockey at The University of Minnesota,” Wyatt Cullen posted on Instagram. “I would like to thank God, my family, teammates, coaches, and everyone else who has helped me get to this point. #gogophs.”
Wyatt Cullen, 5-8 and 146 pounds, spent the 2024-25 season with the U.S. National Team Development Program’s Under-17 squad, collecting nine goals and 39 assists in 88 games. Playing for Moorhead’s Bantam AA team in 2023-24, Cullen amassed 68 goals and 98 assists in 60 games — an average of 2.77 points per game.
Wyatt’s older brother, Brooks, 18, led Moorhead to its first Class 2A high school state championship in March. He has committed to Michigan State.
The commitment of Wyatt Cullen followed shortly after Conboy announced his collegiate choice in Instagram. Conboy, 16, had 24 goals and 20 assists in 27 games for the Panthers in 2024-25. The 6-3, 185-pounder is slated to play for Green Bay of USHL in 2025-26.
