Saints collapse in ninth inning, lose to Iowa Cubs 8-3

Ian Gibaut gave up eight runs after entering in the ninth inning trying to protect a three-run lead.

The Iowa Cubs scored eight runs in the ninth inning and came back for an 8-3 victory over the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field on Sunday.

The Cubs sent 12 batters to the plate in the ninth, getting six hits and taking advantage of two walks and a hit batter. Saints reliever Ian Gibaut began the ninth with a 3-0 lead but let the first eight batters reach before inducing a pop out. Robinson Leyer then replaced him and gave up a two-out, two-run double.

Saints starting pitcher Randy Dobnak threw five shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out five. Lewis Thorpe followed with two more shutout innings, and Andrew Vasquez pitched a scoreless eighth.

Nick Gordon had two hits and a stolen base for the Saints (5-7), who scored all their runs in the first inning off Joe Biagini.
