MILWAUKEE — Cincinnati Reds right-hander Homer Bailey lost his bid for consecutive no-hitters when All-Star Jean Segura singled with one out in the first inning for the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.
Segura dumped a 1-2 pitch into right field for the first hit allowed by Bailey since Josh Donaldson connected for a three-run homer for Oakland in the fourth inning of the Reds' 5-0 loss on June 26. Bailey then threw his second career no-hitter in a 3-0 victory over San Francisco last Tuesday.
Johnny Vander Meer remains the only pitcher to throw consecutive no-hitters in major league history. He accomplished the feat for the Reds on June 11 and June 15 in 1938.
Bailey also lost his bid for consecutive shutouts when Jonathan Lucroy hit a two-run homer with two out in the first.
