A construction company in Red Wing, Minn., is being tagged with a fine of nearly $13,000 for solid waste violations, the state Pollution Control Agency said today.

The MPCA documented the violations by the Flueger Construction Co., which primarily performs excavation and grading work, at a quarry operated by the company.

Although the site is not permitted for disposal of solid waste, the MPCA said, a waste pile measuring 160 feet long by 50 feet wide by 50 feet deep was discovered during an inspection. The pile included municipal solid waste and demolition debris.

In addition to paying the $12,700 civil penalty, the company has also finished two supplemental environmental projects totaling about $6,200 and agreed to remove all solid waste from the quarry.

The projects involved assisting the Red Wing Environmental Learning Center with transportation of building materials and performing a dredging project for the Red Wing Wildlife League.

Blood supplies often run short because fewer people donate over the holidays, leaving some hospitals with less than two-day supplies on hand.
