Readers offer two cents' worth

Readers continue to tip me off to their own saving strategies:

Amy Weum, a Brooklyn Park blogger (Spin theDeal.blogspot.com) who calls herself the Deal Diva, discovered the sweet spot for OnStar subscribers. She was paying $228 per year for OnStar until she discovered that the unadvertised promotional renewal rate is $148 a year. If your OnStar renewal is near, ask for the lower rate.

I have dropped my OnStar coverage occasionally, but then I get e-mail "specials" advertising the lower rate. Call to ask about the lower rate even if your renewal isn't near because OnStar prefers to set up customers with automatic renewal, making it easy to forget to check the rate. I also drop my XM radio subscription occasionally and wait for the $77 per year renewal rate.

Tim suggests that anytime you get a prescription, especially a new one, go to the manufacturer's website for coupons. He was recently prescribed Levaquin and checked Levaquin.com, where a coupon for $15 off a new prescription is available, even if you have a co-pay. Melissa found the same to be true at Lipitor.com. Go to the site and click on "money-saving offers." Sandy said that Costco members without health insurance can get a small additional discount on some prescriptions.

Got a money-saving tip of your own that you've discovered or rediscovered in this economy? I want to hear from you.
