Six players with Minnesota ties were named to the U.S. women's hockey team that will play in the world championships April 4-12 in Finland.
Three-time Olympic forward Jenny Potter of Edina, two-time Olympic forward Natalie Darwitz of Eagan and U.S. national team goalie Megan Van Beusekom of Loretto are among the 10 players chosen from the U.S. select team that is headquartered at Blaine's National Sports Center. Gophers senior forward Gigi Marvin and freshman forwards Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux are among 11 college players on the roster.
The U.S. team opens play against Japan on April 4.
U men at NCAA meet The Gophers' 200-yard freestyle relay team finished seventh at the NCAA men's swimming championships at the Texas A&M campus in College Station, Texas, on Thursday.
The Gophers' Colin Lee-To, Michael Richards, Curt Carlson and Steve Miller combined for a time of 1 minute, 17.65 seconds. Auburn won the event in 1:14.08. The Gophers set a school-record time of 1:17.10 in the preliminaries earlier Thursday.
The Gophers' 400 medley relay team of Nadav Kochavi, Lee-To, Anthony Portela and Carlson finished 13th of 3:11.00.
The Gophers' 32 points left them in 12th place after the first day of the three-day meet. Texas is in first with 171 points, followed by Auburn at 141 and Stanford at 130.
Etc. • Three international hockey exhibition games will be held April 4, 5, and 6 at the National Sports Center. The teams competing in the exhibitions will be playing in the IIHF World U18 Championship, which is scheduled to be held in the Fargo-Moorhead area April 9-19. Germany plays Team USA on April 4 in Blaine; Slovakia plays Switzerland on April 5; and Switzerland faces Russia April 6.
