Polaris recalled 4,700 snowmobiles and 2,230 off-road vehicles after reports of oil leaks, fires, steering problems and in some cases crashes, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported this week.
The commission said Polaris received reports from snowmobile customers about 11 instances of cracked or broken "steering pitman arms" on various Polaris 2015 Rush, Switchback and Indy Voyageur snowmobile models.
Eight of the broken arms caused drivers to lose steering, while three others resulted in a crash. One person was injured, however, "the consumer did not provide any details as to the extent of the injuries," the agency reported. No property damage claims have been filed.
The recall of Polaris' off-road vehicles involves its 2016 RZR XP Turbo models. The commission said no one suffered injuries. Consumers reported two oil leaks in the drain line and two fires.
The Safety Commission advised all owners of the snowmobile and off-road vehicle models to stop driving them and to take them to a local Polaris dealer for a free fix.
The company is contacting customers this week to alert them about the recall, government officials said.
In October, Polaris recalled 53,000 of its 2015 all-terrain vehicles due to a fire hazard.
That recall involved Polaris' 2015 RZR 900 and RZR 1000 off-road models.
