The Ordway Center has announced that it is swapping out one religious-themed British holiday import for another.
“Jesus Christ Superstar” has replaced “Sister Act,” which had been scheduled to run Dec. 9–Jan. 11, 2026. The 50th anniversary revival of “Superstar,” Tim Rice’s and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1971 musical, will run Dec. 9-28.
“Superstar” comes from London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre where it was staged by “Into the Woods” director Timothy Sheader and choreographed by “Strictly Ballroom” dancemaker Drew McOnie in 2017.
It won the Olivier Award, Britain’s Tony equivalent, for best revival. Popular songs from the score include “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and the title track.
“Superstar” anchors a fall lineup that includes the Broadway tour of the love story musical “The Notebook” (Nov. 18-30), Natalie MacMaster’s and Donnell Leahy’s “A Celtic Family Christmas” (Dec. 5) and the return of virtuosic music trio the String Queens (Dec. 6).
