CLEARWATER, Fla. – Outfielder Daniel Palka was one of eight players brought over from the minor leagues Tuesday to make the trip for the game against the Phillies.

He found a way to stand out among the guys wearing uniform numbers in the 90s.

Palka blasted two long home runs in his first spring training game with the Twins as they held off the Phillies 7-5 at Bright House Field.

The Twins led 1-0 in the second inning. When Palka dug in against Phillies righthander Jerad Eickoff. Palka cranked on the first pitch he saw and drove it deep, but foul. But he blasted the next pitch over the right field bleachers for a solo home run.

In the fourth, Eickoff challenged Palka with another fastball, and the Georgia Tech product hammered it over the center field wall for his second homer of the game. The Twins led 3-2 at the time.

"I think he likes the fastball," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "His first three swings went [for] 1,200 feet. Two of them were fair. It was impressive."

Palka, 24, came to the Twins from Arizona during the offseason in exchange for Chris Herrmann. The lefthanded hitting Palka has 51 homers over the past two seasons but also has struck out 293 times. He's happy to leave a good impression.

"Obviously all these guys didn't know me coming in," Palka said. "Just to leave spring training on that note, knowing how I can play."

The Twins broke the game open in the seventh with four runs, including a two-run single by Eddie Rosario. Righthander Phil Hughes, who faced minor leaguers in his previous two starts, gave up four earned runs over 5 ⅓ innings but was pleased with the quality of his pitches — and that he hit 93 miles an hour on the radar gun.
