Minjee Lee, the world's No. 1-rated amateur, shot a course-record 5-under 66 to finish at 140 and easily win the U.S. Women's Open section qualifier at North Oaks Golf Club.
Lee, 17, from Perth, Australia, rose to No. 1 among amateurs on Feb. 26 when she won the Oates Victorian Open in her native country.
Amy Anderson and Maria Fassi tied for second at 149. Anderson won a one-hole playoff with a birdie to determine the first alternate for the U.S. Open from June 19-22 in Pinehurst, N.C.
U freshman hailed
Trevor Yedoni of the Gophers was named the Big Ten freshman of the year in track and field. He won the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 10 inches in the conference meet last weekend. He is a redshirt freshman from Eden Prairie who went to Benilde-St. Margaret's.
He is only the third Gopher to win this award; the others were Jason Boon in 1993 and Staffan Strand in 1997.
• Senior Zach Siegmeier, who won his second consecutive Big Ten outdoor pole vault title, was named the winner of the inaugural Garry Bjorklund Award as the team's MVP.
He cleared 17-10½. He was also the conference indoor champion this winter in his event.
McCarville to play
Lynx center Janel McCarville, who sprained an ankle late in Sunday's overtime victory over Connecticut, is expected to be available when the Lynx play at Tulsa on Friday night.
