St. Thomas defeated Linfield, the defending national champion from McMinnville, Ore., 10-0 on Friday in the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis.
Sophomore Eric Veglahn threw a two-hitter for the Tommies (38-7) and retired the first 21 hitters he faced.
"It was just one of those days," said Veglahn, a southpaw from La Crescent, Minn., who had a career-high 12 strikeouts. "I had good location on my fastball, and my curve and slider were working, too."
Catcher J.D. Dorgan was 2-for-3 with three RBI for St. Thomas, which scored five runs in the first inning and five in the sixth.
The Tommies, who have a 13-game winning streak, will play Baldwin Wallace of Emory, Ga., at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the winners' bracket. They are 11-0 in first- and second-round games in the national tournament the past 16 years.
Softball team wins, too
In the Division III softball World Series in Tyler, Texas, St. Thomas routed Rochester, N.Y., 9-1 in the losers' bracket on Brenna Walek's grand slam in the first inning and Katie Jo Delisle's five-hitter.
Walek's homer was her 17th of the season, tying a program record. Teammate Emily Gregory had three hits, two RBI and scored two runs.
The Tommies (42-7) will play either Tufts or Montclair State at 5 p.m. Saturday.
