Minnesota Scene: Gophers' hockey series almost all on traditional days

Dates for the Gophers' 2014-15 hockey schedule were confirmed Tuesday and the announcement should make fans happy. All but one Big Ten series is Friday-Saturday.

The Gophers' conference matchups: at Michigan State (Dec. 5-6), at Michigan (Jan. 9-10), home vs. Wisconsin (Jan. 16-17), at Wisconsin (Jan. 30-31), vs. Ohio State (Feb. 6-7), vs. Michigan (Feb. 13-14) and at Penn State (Feb. 20-21). The lone Thursday-Friday Big Ten series will be a home series vs. Michigan State (Feb. 26-27), followed by a series at Ohio State (March 6-7) and a series vs. Penn State (March 13-14).

A nonconference series with Notre Dame, originally scheduled for Nov. 7-8 at Mariucci Arena, has been split to a Friday and Sunday series.

Game times and TV schedules will be announced later.

• Anna Laorr and McKenzie Neisen, the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, both won 1-up in the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Women's State Match Play Championship at the Minneapolis Golf Club. Laorr beat Ashli Helstrom, Neisen edged Cassie Deeg. Other winners were Olivia Herrick and Katherine Marie Smith.

• The South team beat the North 7-0 in the American Association All-Star Game in Winnipeg. Anthony Claggett of the St. Paul Saints started for the North and pitched two scoreless innings. Dan Sattler gave up two runs in the ninth. Henry Wrigley and Evan Bigley were a combined 1-for-7.

• Mark McLaughlin of Minneapolis shot a 69 at Bunker Hills Golf Club to lead five qualifiers for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship on Sept. 6-11 in Bethlehem, Pa. Also advancing were Dylan Gergen of Mendota Heights; Eric Deutsch of Rochester, Minn.; Jeremy Decko of Carlos, Minn., and Tommy Clement, of Mobile, Ala.
