Minnesota Scene: Ever-bigger Schwan's Cup starts Friday

The 30th Schwan's USA Cup starts Friday at the National Sports Center in Blaine. A record 1,060 teams, from under-9 to U19, are participating from 21 states and 19 countries.

Opening ceremonies will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

• Margaret Gehring was named the head coach of the Macalester College men's and women's track and field teams. She coached the women's team at Ohio Wesleyan University the past six seasons.

• Casey Danielson shot a 70 and Cassandra Deeg a 71 at Hastings Country Club to qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur Aug. 4-10 in Glencove, N.Y. The third qualifier was Sarah Burnham, who shot a 75 and won a three-player playoff.
