Minnesota Scene: Blaine golfer wins state junior PGA title

Caleb VanArragon of Blaine shot a 1-under 71 to win the Minnesota Boys Junior PGA Championship at Chaska Town Course with a 144 total, one stroke better than Connor Glynn of Waconia and Gavin Cronkhite of Lakeville, all in the age 13-15 division.

Jack Johnson (147) of Chaska won the 16-18 division, beating Tyler Westra of Sioux Falls, S.D., Muzzy Donohue of Mendota Heights and Colin O'Hern of Dennison, Minn., in a playoff. All had tied at 147.

• Gophers holder Jacob Herbers, a sophomore from Battle Creek, Mich., was named to the watch list for the Mortell Award, which goes to the nation's best at that specialty.

• Burnsville pitcher Sam Carlson, the Minnesota Mr. Baseball award winner, made his professional debut on Thursday for the Seattle Mariners' farm team in the Arizona League (rookie level). Carlson pitched a scoreless inning against the Rangers.

• Former Gophers pitcher Tyler Hanson signed a free-agent contract with the Colorado Rockies. Hanson was 4-4 with a 3.88 ERA in 19 appearances for the Gophers this season as a senior.
