Mid-day talker: Just how bad is the NFL rule that cost the Lions?

Here we go.

"If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. He then must take three additional steps. Show the referee the ball. Answer a trivia question. Bake a cake. Find Uruguay on a map of South America. Then take another couple of steps. Then it's a touchdown."

Italicized part may or may not be true. But seriously? Bad rule, bad interpretation of the rule, or both? Because the Lions got absolutely hosed.

Detroit, on the bright side, leads the free world in diplomatic responses to complete hose-jobs (see: Galarraga, Armando; and Schwartz, Jim).

Your thoughts, less diplomatic, in the comments.

Also: Colleague Vince Tuss wonders via Twitter how this play in last year's Super Bowl could be a completion and the Lions' play wasn't. Good question.
