Michael Foods not charged in egg-product price-fixing

February 28, 2009 at 5:10AM

Michael Foods Inc. of Minnetonka, the continent's biggest egg in the processing business, says that federal investigators have closed its price-fixing investigation and notified the company that no indictments or charges have been filed.

The investigation by antitrust division of the Justice Department began in March 2008, when Michael Foods and other egg-product companies received subpoenas. The government sought information relating to the pricing, marketing and sale of egg products.

With more than 11 million hens, Michael Foods is the largest North American producer of processed eggs and has a 45 percent share of the market.

Also named last fall as being subjects of investigation were MoArk, a California unit of Twin Cities-based Land O'Lakes, and Golden Oval of Renville, Minn. Golden Oval and Land O'Lakes said today that they also won't be subjected to any indictments or charges.
