A man died early Sunday morning in St. Paul after his car left a highway and struck an overhead sign post.

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound on Interstate 94 around 1:45 a.m. when it exited the roadway, according to a crash report from the Minnesota State Patrol. Exiting to Mounds Boulevard, the vehicle struck an overhead sign post before a fire erupted, Lt. Mike Lee said.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities had not identified the driver as of Sunday afternoon. It’s unclear if he was wearing a seatbelt or consumed alcohol prior to the crash.
