A child injured by a self-inflicted gunshot is expected to recover and a man who kept the gun in his bedroom was arrested.

Police in Brooklyn Center were called to an address in the 4200 block of Winchester Lane about 12:40 a.m. Wednesday and arrived to find a semi-conscious child with a gunshot wound to the head, said Cmdr. Tony Gruenig.

Gruenig described the injury as a “grazing wound.” The 4-year-old boy was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment, he said.

An adult male who lived at the residence had the weapon in a bedroom. The child entered the room, found the gun and shot himself, Gruenig said.

Officers recovered the gun at the scene and arrested the 28-year-old man. He was taken to the Hennepin County jail where he was being held on possible charges of probable cause child endangerment and negligent storage of a firearm.

The Star Tribune generally does not name suspects until charges are filed.
