MakeMusic Inc., an Eden Prairie software company, has acquired Garritan Corp., a creator of music playing software that imitates the sounds of instruments from around the world.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Garritan, based in Orcas, Wash., will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of MakeMusic, which creates school software for music practice and performance evaluation.

Garritan maintains that the musical sounds in its software library are often indistinguishable from the sounds produced by real musical instruments during a live performance. The software-produced sounds have been used in television and movies.
