As expected, the Lynx signed center Waltiea Rolle.

The 6-6 Rolle, 22, was a third-round draft choice of the Lynx in 2013. She is currently playing for Haskovo of the Women's Bulgaria League, where she has averaged a league-best 23.7 points in 16 games.

As a senior at North Carolina, Rolle, a native of the Bahamas, averaged 12.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.

Rolle will be among the players competing for the job of backing up starting Lynx center Janel McCarville. The Lynx already have announced the signing of Brazilian center Damiris Dantas, a first-round pick in 2012.

Softball ace honored

Gophers freshman Sara Groenewegen received Big Ten Softball Pitcher of the Week and Big Ten Softball Co-Freshman of the Week honors after her performance in a Sunday doubleheader against Wisconsin, the league announced.

In addition to going 3-for-6 at the plate last week, Groenewegen pitched a no-hitter into the seventh inning in her first career start against the Badgers and first-ever start at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, allowing only five baserunners and striking out nine. She is 8-0 with one shutout and 84 strikeouts.

Groenwegen shared the freshman award with Nebraska's Marjani Knighten this week. Last week, she and Purdue's Katy McJunkin shared the honor.
