Lions, Suh reach deal on contract

Rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions, giving one of the NFL's worst defenses a big boost up front.

Both sides were working on the language of the deal and it was expected to be done by Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night on condition of anonymity because the talks were confidential.

Detroit selected the 6-4, 307-pound Suh with the second overall pick in April's draft, hoping the former Nebraska star could bolster a defense that has ranked among the league's all-time worst in points allowed the past two seasons.

Lions kicker Hanson undergoes knee surgery

Lions kicker Jason Hanson has undergone minor knee surgery but is expected to be back in time for the regular season.

Haynesworth again skips conditioning test

Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth didn't take the team's conditioning test Tuesday, again because of his sore left knee. For those keeping score, there have now been three days in which Haynesworth has attempted the test and three days in which he hasn't.

Haynesworth is not allowed to practice until he passes the test.

No discipline on Vick

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has told Michael Vick he will not face disciplinary action following a shooting at the quarterback's birthday party six weeks ago. The NFL and the Eagles have been looking into a shooting at a nightclub in Virginia Beach, Va., where Vick held his 30th birthday party on June 25.

Packers' Jolly avoids trial

Suspended Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly made a deal with prosecutors to avoid trial on a felony drug charge and have the case against him dismissed if he stays out of trouble for the next year.

Jolly was given pretrial diversion, a form of probation that will have the possession of a controlled substance charge against him dismissed in a year if he doesn't break the law and completes other requirements, including 160 hours of community service.

Pro Bowl center O'Hara out again with ankle

Pro Bowl center Shaun O'Hara's swollen left ankle is causing concern for the Giants. The 33-year-old O'Hara was sent from training camp at the University at Albany to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City on Tuesday for an MRI.

Bruins sign second overall pick The Boston Bruins have signed forward Tyler Seguin, the second player taken in this year's NHL draft.

Financial terms of the three-year, entry-level deal were not released, but it was reportedly in the neighborhood of contract No. 1 overall draft pick Taylor Hall signed with Edmonton that will bring him $900,000 a year with bonuses that could bring it to a total of $3.75 million.

Blackhawks sign prospect Makarov

Russian winger Igor Makarov has signed a two-year contract with the Blackhawks. He was a second-round draft pick by Chicago in 2006.

Flyers' Pronger has knee surgery

Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger is recovering from minor surgery on his right knee last week. Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren said the 35-year-old Pronger will be ready for the start of training camp in September.

NBA: The Celtics are making progress on a deal that would bring Shaquille O'Neal to the defending Eastern Conference champions, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. The 38-year-old O'Neal spent last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. ... The Heat will debut their All-Star trio of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh at Boston on Oct. 26 against the Celtics. ... The Heat signed veteran guard Eddie House to a $2.8 million, two-year contract.
