Katie Thyken's first goal of the season, in the 84th minute, gave the Gophers a 1-0 victory over Maryland on Friday in Big Ten women's soccer at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
Olivia Schultz passed ahead to Thyken, who beat Terrapins keeper Rachelle Beanlands on a one-on-one confrontation.
Tarah Hobbs had four saves, including three in the second half, for the Gophers (9-7-1, 6-4-1 Big Ten).
The Gophers had four shots, but only Julianna Gernes' was on goal in the opening half. The loss kept Maryland (5-5-6, 3-3-5) at .500 overall and in the conference.
Concordia wins in five
Concordia (St. Paul) needed five sets to beat Southwest Minnesota State in a showdown for first place in NSIC volleyball in Marshall.
The Golden Bears, No. 3 in the AVCA's Division II national rankings, won 23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 15-7 on Friday night behind four hitters with at least 13 kills. Mariya Sampson had 15 kills for the visitors, Riley Hanson, Emma Lange and Anna Schlaak 13 each.
Sarah Parker had 16 kills for Southwest Minnesota State.
Concordia (19-3, 12-2) now leads the No. 5 Mustangs (16-6, 11-3) by one match in the conference race.
