The Minneapolis sweat market is heating up.

LA Fitness, a California sports club that competes directly with home-grown Life Time Fitness Inc., recently announced plans to open a sports club in Calhoun Square, the first new tenant in a redevelopment and expansion of the retail and entertainment complex in Minneapolis' hip Uptown neighborhood.

The 31,500-square-foot fitness center will mostly be on the second floor of the complex, with a street-level entrance off Lake Street. LA Fitness, based in Irvine, Calif., plans to open the club next year.

Keith Anderson, executive vice president for Capital Growth Madison Marquette (CGMM), the mixed-use retail center's management company, said in a statement that the addition of LA Fitness "both fit our goals of providing unique entertainment options and gathering spaces for the Uptown community."

Last year, Calhoun Square changed hands for the second time in three years, when it was purchased for $47.3 million by BlackRock, a New York investment company.

The new owners and managers of the center received city approval this year for a plan to redevelop the complex.

The plans include demolishing some small buildings at opposite ends of the center and building a two-story extension on Lake Street and another two-story extension on Hennepin Avenue near 31st Street. Plans also call for renovating the mall and adding two levels to the three-level parking ramp.
