Employed 422,778 workers, an increase of 12.5 percent over 2005 (but it decreased 1.1 percent from 2007 to 2008).

Generated $24.6 billion in payroll, up 11.4 percent over 2005 (but it decreased 1.4 percent from 2007 to 2008)

Shipped $136 billion in products, up 11.6 percent over 2005 (increased 2.8 percent from 2007 to 2008)

State rankings in med-tech employment

California: 84,000

Minnesota: 26,900

Massachusetts: 23,900

Minnesota: 1.06 percent of state employment

Utah: 0.93 percent
