St. Cloud State routs No. 1 Gophers in college hockey Top 10 showdown, read Friday night's game story.
Jonny Brodzinski won't gloat about St. Cloud State's 4-1 rout of the No. 1 Gophers on Friday night even if it means family bragging rights.
Jonny's brother Michael Brodzinski is a sophomore defenseman for the Gophers and enjoyed a pair of victories last year against his older brother. The second meeting of the in-state rivals sent the Gophers to the Frozen Four. The first was a 4-1 victory in the first round of the inaugural North Star College Cup.
"Yeah, it's kind of nice," getting this win, Jonny said after scoring a goal and assist. But he wouldn't resort to taunting his brother. "I'm not the guy to do that," he added.
Despite the impressive home win, Jonny thought the Huskies didn't play all that well.
"I think it was just a team effort. I felt like today we didn't play our best game for sure. We really couldn't handle the puck, but we found a way to get the puck in the net," Jonny said. "[Goaltender] Charlie [Lindgren] played good today. There were some times when he bailed us out big time. You see it in practice and now you see it in games."
St. Cloud State coach Bob Motzko also thought both teams were sloppy at times, but his team won the goaltending and special teams battle to grab the edge. The home crowd also helped.
"It is big for the Minnesota kids, its big for our fans, you can't hide from it. It's a great atmosphere. It's one of the best atmospheres you're going to see in college hockey," Motzko said.
