Tech Mahindra, an Indian information technology outsourcing firm, said Friday that its employment in Fargo, N.D., has grown to 170 mostly technical workers from 12 two years ago.

Fargo is one of seven technology centers the Indian firm runs in North America, in part because some of its U.S. clients "want our facilities to be located in the North American time zones and to have English-speaking employees," said Lakshmanan Chidambaram, senior vice president of sales and operations for North America.

Company employees in Fargo will work on writing and maintaining software for retailers, banks and telecommunications companies, he said.

Tech Mahindra, based in Pune, India, has 87,000 employees worldwide and revenue of about $2.9 billion. Its other North American operations are in Nebraska, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Texas and Canada.
