In addition to launching party organizing in this midterm election year, the meetings will give a snapshot of how voters are viewing President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Precinct caucuses have started across Minnesota, as Republican and Democratic activists gather in community centers and schools Tuesday night to discuss their party’s platform and issues that matter to them.

It signals the start of party organizing ahead of this fall’s midterm elections, and it’s playing out against the backdrop of the ongoing federal immigration enforcement surge, which is certain to be a major election-year issue as Minnesotans prepare to elect a new governor and a new U.S. senator, and weigh in on dozens of other federal and state races.

Also Tuesday, a federal judge ordered the release of two Venezuelan men accused of assaulting an immigration officer last month outside a north Minneapolis duplex, arguing the men do not pose a flight risk. An agent shot one of the men in the incident, which led to a late-night dustup between protesters and law enforcement.
