For weeks ICE has stepped up enforcement in Minnesota as part of “Operation Metro Surge.”

Clashes between ICE agents and protesters have escalated in the past month as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) turned its eye on the Twin Cities.

Gov. Tim Walz said the Trump administration is not sharing any information with the state about increased immigration enforcement, but he said he was expecting an influx of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents over the holidays.

  • Called “Operation Metro Surge,” ICE agents have stepped up their presence in Minneapolis, St. Paul and several nearby suburbs.
    • DHS says it has resulted in more than 670 arrests so far, although the Minnesota Star Tribune has been unable to verify that number. The agency has not released a list of those detained.
