Job: Guitar technician for Madison's Lutherie Services at Guitar Center in Roseville
Pay: $13 per hour
What type of training did you need for this job? I went to tech school at Minnesota State College Southeast Tech where they had a guitar program -- guitar construction and repair. I built three guitars and learned how to repair them, finish them, set them up and pretty much everything else you can think of.
What's the main thing people have wrong with their guitars? They're not set up. That just means the condition of the guitar's playability. It's how high the strings are off the neck and all of the other adjustments. Our Number 1 services are cleaning, restringing and resetting guitars.
I assume you play the guitar? I do; I've been playing for 17 years.
Why did you start? It was really cool when I was 14. It's what all the bands I liked were playing so it's what I wanted to do, too.
Are you in a band? Yeah, it's called the Caspian Depression. We play indie rock.
Do a lot of people think they can fix their guitars on their own? Yes, there's a lot of that. But that's part of learning. You have to tinker a bit and make some mistakes before you get to where you're going. That's how I got started, so I've been there, too. I try to be understanding.
