Details: The planned redevelopment of three former retail buildings along Richfield's Interstate 494 into a showcase Honda automotive dealership is shifting into high gear with a request for rooftop parking atop the new structure.
The Richfield Planning Commission at its April 28 meeting unanimously approved requests for several changes to previously approved plans for the 117,649-square-foot building. They included a request to allow 143 vehicle storage spaces on its roof, adding 48,635 square feet of exterior space to the total.
The city gave its blessing to owner Tom Wood Auto Group's plans last summer. The new Honda center will be built on what is now the site of a former LaMettry's auto body shop, a USA Baby store and a Tires Plus outlet on the north frontage of I-494. The dealership indicated in a blog post that demolition of the older buildings was expected to begin the week of May 5.
Also part of the effort is the relocation of Richfield Bloomington Mitsubishi onto a next-door parcel at 400 W. 78th St. Construction of that 28,000-square-foot building is underway and is expected to be completed in early August.
