Details: Raising Cane's, a chicken restaurant chain, has landed development-stage approvals for its third Twin Cities location next to a Target store in Shoreview.

Encouraged by the performance of its locations in Minneapolis and Apple Valley, the Baton Rouge, La.-based purveyor of deep-fried chicken tenderloins received the unanimous backing of the Shoreview City Council last week to build on Lexington Avenue south of Interstate 694.

The site is in a corner of the parking lot of a SuperTarget. The retailer last year received permission to replat its property, creating a separate lot for development. Target approached the restaurant chain about the newly created lot and a deal was struck, Raising Cane's director of property development, Robert Montgomery, told the council.

The privately owned company has outlets in 17 states and is getting ready to mark its 200th restaurant with a new location in Houston. The tentative timeline for the Shoreview location calls for a groundbreaking in March or April followed by a 107-day construction schedule.

The 2,890-square-foot restaurant required several variances, including a deviation from the city's sign codes to allow for a mural on an exterior wall, a trademark of Raising Cane's. The murals, hand-painted by a Baton Rouge artist, are a reference to the company's first restaurant near Louisiana State University. Founder Todd Graves uncovered a vintage mural during a renovation and incorporated it into the restaurant.
